New Mommie Helen’s Bakery location opens in San Bernardino

Updated: Sep 10, 2020

San Bernardino Sun (The Sun): The city has a new business, but not an unfamiliar name in the Inland Empire, its owner said. The Original Mommie Helen’s Bakery is now open in San Bernardino, turning out its legendary pies, cobblers and cakes to eager locals.

Most in demand is the sweet potato pie.

Owner Dorothy Pryor Rose and daughters Tedra Rose and Tekesha Pryor are busy in the kitchen from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the bakery’s new home at 1440 S. E St., next door to the FedEx office.

The beloved bakery came to San Bernardino from Colton, where it had outgrown two progressively larger locations.

Baked goods from the popular bakery, touted by the likes of Magic Johnson and Oprah Winfrey, are so much in demand that Shaquille O’Neal ordered 250 peach cobblers for his wedding.

The family-owned business is named in honor of Dorothy Rose’s mother, Helen Williams, who passed down her recipes to her daughter and granddaughters.

The health department came out and OK’d everything, according to Rose.

“Since we’re finally OK with permits, we’re ready to do business and have loaded up our ovens,” she said.

I love your pies and cobblers. I have been coming to your previous and now bakery for about 25 years. Mommie Helen did a great thing, passing on her recipes to her family. I now travel from Las Vegas to buy you pies and cobblers. I can't afford to purchase 250 pies but I eat all I can and always buy 5 potatoe pies and 4 cobblers to share with my family. I am 76 years old and know good food..Continue to do well. God Bless
